Cancer is a Boss in Remnant 2. Cancer is a powerful Root Spriggan that players have to face in the Ashen Wasteland. Bosses are the ultimate Enemies as they present a more challenging battle than Enemies or "Elite" Enemies. They are usually found guarding special locations or items, and some of them are important to the Lore and main Story of the game.

Remnant 2 Cancer Strategy Writeup

After a checkpoint, you will trigger a short cutscene and find Cancer, a powerful Root boss. Cancer pounds its arms on the ground, and some damaging roots emerge from it. It can create one big root or many smaller roots, that looks like bushes, infesting the battlefield.

Cancer can close out the distance between you by lunging towards the player and can also smash its face on the ground. Its weak spot is in its back. It may be difficult to hit it there, but there are some attacks it performs that leave it vulnerable. Such as the headbutt.

Around 50% health, it will start using the AOE attacks more frequently. This means that players will have to be constantly aware of the battlefield and their surroundings.

Attacks & Counter

Attack Description Counter
Jump N' Stomp Cancer leans back and jumps a great distance. Creating a shockwave when landing. Dodge as the shockwave is incoming. Try to stay far away from its landing spot.
Line Attack: Cancer puts down one of its arms and creates a straight attack that emerges from the ground. This attack starts forming from Cancer's position and moves from him. Dodge to either side.
Claw Attack Cancer lunges towards you and uses its claw to perform a melee attack. It uses this move to close the distance between you. Cancer will look down and prepare to lunge at you. Dodge to either side.
Headbutt Close range attack. Cancer leans back and attempts to headbutt you. Will get stuck in the ground. As soon as it leans back, dodge. Land a few hits while stuck on the ground.
Glitch Swipe After around 60% health, boss will glitch forward, and then flicker as it raises arm to strike. First attack is a feint, every attack after is real. When boss flickers forward, brace yourself to not dodge its first swipe, dodge every attack afterward.

Remnant 2 Cancer Notes & Trivia and Gallery

  • Cancer shares several attacks as well as portions of it's theme with Haarsguard, Root Harbinger from Remnant: From the Ashes.
  • Root Spriggans only appear in the Corrupted Harbor area, making Cancer one of the few bosses of which the base version can only be found after their battle.

You can just spam melee and he literally cant hit you with anything except his jump and stomp. Once you figure that out this dude is a joke of a boss.

Pretty sure in lore this guy is supposed to be the Root Earth's version of Harsgaard, considering the deliberate similarities in his theme to Harsgaard's theme from the Remnant 1 DLC, as well as having similar moves.

First time on veteran he was a rough fight, I was rather squishy so his ground spikes were tearing large chunks of health.
On apocalypse i one sidedly beat him down. turns out going full on unga bunga mode makes him practically a pushover. So if you wanted to try out a tanky melee build, this guy is the perfect punching bag to test it on!

trust me. get behind it and it’s screwed. can melee til it dies between each jump. even the aoe root attack has no chance. it can hit reg sometimes but not enough to one shot.

thank you shotgun and song of eafir to save my ass
full leto mk2+bright steel ring, still one shot by gravity wave though

              • Anonymous

There is a bug (not sure if the patch already fixed it for pc) if you try to summon anything in the room before the fog door the skill glitches and you can't summon until you rest at a checkpoint. So if you use summoner, summon in the arena, not before.

I fought Apocalypse version of Cancer with Empathy & Drain.

I ran full on tank build w/ shield to avoid the empathy and just mowed it down with Acid machine gun fire. took at least 10-15 minutes. the ring of bright steel i think lets you roll fast with heavy armor. life saver.

This dude lives up to his name on apocalypse. I have a tank build, that has allowed me to get through the entire game only dying 3 times and 1 of those was gravity... until this boss. My build went from surviving anything thrown my way to the tiniest of his brambles 1 shotting me.

So an easy to beat guide for this guy on Appocalyps.

-Large amounts of armor like a Leto 2 set (switch out one part so you don't flop roll)
-Melee of your choice (i gone with Feral Judgement) + Shield breaker mutator at +9 (if you lvl it to 10 it consumes shield on charge attack so thats a no)
-Challanger + Invader Archetypes (Challenger for + Juggernaut + die hard perk , Invader for Void cloak)
                      - Matriarch's Insignia, Fae Bruiser Ring, Burden of the Gambler, Haymaker Ring (you can switch this out but I didn't have better :D) , Rerouting Cable rings and neck (relic is your choice, he got empathy so he healed when i used it and its the 1 shot you are affraid of anyway with this boss.)
-Long gun and pistol doesen't realy matter but I used Nebula for corrosive/acid proc
-Traits I had at the time: Strongback and Untouchable from archetypes, Fortify 10, Triage 10, Spirit 5, Expertise 5, Barkskin 10, Shadeskin 10, Siphoner 10 (this is mostly just what I had at the time not specific traits. Was doing Engi/Challanger but this boss just stopped me... so switched tactics xd)

The gist of the build is to survive that 1 shot. There is more than enough resi+ shield to survive the 1 shot. Than comes the Challanger's prime perk that saves you from dying + Void Cloak.

                      Strat:
As soon as you enter the arena pop Void cloak if you are not sure you can make it to him. Stay behind him and melee him (charged attacks most of the time for shields from Rerouting Cable). When he jumps away comes the red wave attack than 2 root attack. If you can dodge red waves pop Void cloak after wave if not than before and than Juggernaut. When it does the 3 auto attack you can easily walk out of the first 2 than dodge to its back on the 3rd attack Repeat till dead.

So this is what I came up with at desperate times :D. Hope it helps someone out there.

I just fought a viscious spiteful one of these.

Regardless of how much armor and hp i stacked it would one shot me roughly around 70% of its hp.

I decided "**** it" and went pure damage and i-framed through everything. The red branches bursting out the ground are so hard to see sometimes thats the real difficulty.

                          • I imagine the boss might be fun, but its absolutely impossible to dodge attacks with the SLIGHTEST bit of network latency with the host (which if you're playing multiplayer on steam, you probs got latency). 4/10

                            • If you're not a melee weapon guy like myself, i beat him in apo without getting hit by just always going in his back (kinda following the melee wpn strat).

I used the ford shotgun with electric bullet mod and bandit mutator (just to reload lest often and deal more dps), the void idol in amulet (to reload faster when you have to and it use 50% less ammo so why not), heart of the wolf (just to go faster in his back).

Everything else is up to you, you can run black cat band if you're scared of getting one shot, gunslinger classes to get more ammo.

With this strat the only "scary" moments are when he jump out of you to summon tentacles and when he glith if you're not familiar with his pattern.

                              Good luck everyone

Wow~ What a f*cking cancer Boss. Imagine you fight this ******* in Apocalyspe.
Not really the damage that I'm afraid but my work gonna be in vain if I accidently use heal.

Knowing when to shoot is important for this boss. It will start with its bullshit root attacks then go in for a 3 hit melee combo. When it does a lunge attack, dodge towards it so you can get behind it to shoot its weakspot. After it does a leap aoe attack, it will always turn around and do a root attack. It almost always does 2 root attacks one with each arm. Focus on dodging and never dodge backwards since you can't see if there is a root spawning behind. After the second root attack, you are safe to revive or shoot. And then it goes in for melee again. Pretty easy once you learn its pattern. Dodging its glitch attack is as described in wiki, wait out the feint and then dodge the real attacks. And there's usually 2 real attacks to dodge.

Seems like a fun fight except I'm flabbergasted by the amount of moves it has that look like little plinks and chips but actually one-shot me while I'm wearing full Leto Mark II armour with maxed survivability perks. Insane

Unironically just put on melee lifesteal and beat him up, just did it with an unupgraded assassin's dagger and it was so much easier

                                      • Anonymous

Ok, this is super weird. I fought it having the weapon mod equipped - Rootlash. Using the tentacles, it grew to a huge size without attacking. They just stood still, after a while they plunged into the arena and grew to the size of a small tree :D

If you are struggling like I was, I found a fairly easy method of beating it.

My build uses large amounts of lifesteal, which allows me to ignore most small tentacle attacks entirely.

                                          Method:
Walk in circles around him while firing, keep an eye on tentacles and dodge roll through them to break them (or just shoot them).

When he charges you do NOT immediately dodge, wait for the telegraphed swing and dodge behind him, this exposes his weakspot.
You may need to dodge 2 or 3 times like that in a row, if he turns quickly.

The double swing is best dodged like mentioned above, you cannot get out of the range otherwise, and it would require a well-timed dodge to use i-frames.

Takes me about 1 min 30 sec to kill him now, just after realizing that dodging behind him was possible.

Ohh.. And remember to dodge into the big wave, if you go sideways or away from it, you will end up staying in the damage zone when the i-frames ends. (insta-kills you)

Just found and beat this guy for the first time a while ago. Technically, this means I've beaten Cancer three times now. Heh.

Also, this guy's theme seemingly has some of the motifs of Harsgaard's stage two theme, while he shares some of the melee moves of the first stage. I wonder if there is any sort of significance there.

Easy boss, lunges are super telegraphed and easy to punish. Keeping distance is easy due to lunges being his only gap closer

                                              • Anonymous

He heals when I put on my shield! WHY? I thought these bosses heal from your own heals but why when I specifically switch to should he heals when I use it?

The other boss that healed from your heals had a phase where he was in flying orb form where you could heal. I beat that one by just only healing during that phase.
