Remnant 2 Kaeula's Shadow Strategy Writeup

When you grab Kaeula's Tear, you will be grabbed and taken to a gigantic arena where this boss is located. This boss makes both ranged and melee attacks, but its ranged attacks give a bigger window to cause damage unless you are heavily invested in a melee build. Attack it and dodge its attacks until it hides in the ground triggering its second phase, after it reemerges maintain a medium distance and use the terrain to cover when dealing with the wave attack. It will try to close the distance with its dig, but after the first attack it gives ample time to back up.

Attacks & Counter

Attack Counter
Root Tendril: It hits the ground with its root tentacle arm and hits at range with it coming out of the ground. Dodge the attack and shoot it till it retracts.
Impale: Uses its tentacle arm to hit forward when you are close to melee range. Dodge to the side, you will have a small window to shoot or activate a mod.
Sword Combo: When you approach to melee range, it will make two sweeps with the giant blade it holds in the non-tentacle arm, it will finish with an overhead smash. Dodge backwards at least twice, the last attack has more range but doesn't cover space horizontally.
Dig Attack: When enough range is reached between the player character and the boss, it will dig in the ground and appear next to you. It will make a quick attack with the tentacles while half out of the ground and then stand up. When you see it dig down, pay attention to where it comes out next to you to evade the first attack accordingly. Make sure to put some distance after that to not trigger the sword attack at a deadly range.
Tentacle Summon: After a certain amount of damage is taken, it will dig down and hide while summoning many tentacles like the one from the Dig Attack. They will attack with either a sweep or a slam, for the first dodge backwards and for the second you can dodge to the side. When they are all dead, the boss will come back up.
Wave Attack: After the first time it hides, it will start making a ranged attack that covers a lot of ground, run to the side to avoid it. Be mindful of the distance between you and the boss, it makes the attack when you are too far away. Use the terrain to cover.

    • An easy way to tell where the deep water is in this fight are the pink flower petals that litter the arena. The long "paths" of them are shallow, whereas areas with small patches or outright none, is deep water.

Once I realized this, positioning became much easier. I haven't seen it mentioned here yet, so I thought I'd help out!

I have no Problem with the Boss but meeting in Hardcore mode the Elite with this Boss moveset is rly annoying ;)

I'm having a terrible time with this boss, it rolled regenerator and honestly I just run out of ammo before I can kill it. Its not even a mechanics issue at this point.

A funny thing to note about this community is that there are people calling Magister Dullain a she when Dullain is actually a he...meanwhile they also call Kaeula a he when it is actually a she. Humans...I swear.

The fight seems really unfair at first, but once you learn how to react to all of the moves, there actually isn't much BS going on. Since this boss has no weakspot, you ideally want to go for critical damage. Akari Warband, Probability cord, that sort of thing. On the other hand you can shoot wherever you like, so aiming is completely trivial here. Most of the attacks are relatively easy to dodge, the real issue comes from the chance of dodging into deep water. There are four pillars in the arena, two of them have higher ground all the way around. I recommend hugging one of them and circling around. That way it's much easier to control the distance, and it limits potential angles during tentacle phases.

There also seems to be a tentacle arm sweep melee it does at times. So far, I'm thinking the trigger is being behind the boss.

I just got a Simulacrum from defeating this boss. It was on Nightmare. Not sure if it was because of the difficulty setting or because I've gotten the ring a certain number of times.

Point to take note of, if you attack the hand he's holding the sword with, it does more damage than if you shoot him anywhere else

Initial impressions might make this out to be a frustating encounter; but it's actually pretty doable. Once you have a consistent way to get rid of the tentacles the fight as a whole becomes easier. Shotgun + decent melee worked for me. The Shadow himself has very telegraphed attack patterns and after each he leaves himself plenty open to unload and/or heal. The arena itself only has the deep water sections on the outskirts, so its pretty telling the fight is meant to be played out in the center with the semi-raised mud-paths. Finally when he despawns and spawns the tentacle horde the main thing to realize is that they tend to attack from the one you're closest to or focusing.

boss is alright, the arena is not very cool though and would be improved immensely if they just got rid of the deep water

Awful boss and arena design. Should learn how to implement difficulty more from souls games, where you don't feel like you couldn't do anything to avoid a death.

While fighting this boss in particular, specifically with another player, he aggroed only to my player 2. Every single time we fought it, always attacked him. Even when I started the fight and he joined later instead of later, the boss immediately began to ignore me and went after my teammate. We have no idea why. Any thoughts?

When I first encountered this boss and managed to reach the second phase, I also thought it was an unfunny joke. Then I realized that this boss does not require sight, but hearing. His movements in the second form were all mainly signaled by sound, which helped me a lot in fighting him.

However, I can understand why a lot of people are frustrated with fighting this boss. What happens on the screen is cool when you're watching the fight, not participating in it....

Just need to point out that this boss is NOT optional, since you cannot access the exit without summoning him. The exit is blocked off by a stone wall, which he breaks during his introduction cinematic.
